Mayor of Bilbao, Iñaki Azkuna, has been awarded the January 29, 2011, with the decoration of Officer of the Legion of Honor of the French Republic for his work in promoting cultural cooperation between the Basque Country France, which results in the close relations of cooperation existing between the towns of Bilbao and Bordeaux.
The presentation of the insignia of Officer of the Legion of Honor, held at the premises of the French Institute in Bilbao, has been chaired by Alain Juppe, Minister of State, Defense Minister and Mayor of Bordeaux, who has attended Bizkaia's capital accompanied by the mayors Bayonne, Jean Grenet, and Donibane Lohizune-San Juan de Luz, Peyuco Duhart.
Legion of Honor is the most famous and important French decorations, set up under Napoleon I to recognize the outstanding achievements made by people with this distinguished award.
